ASTM Developing More Efficient Test for Lubricating Greases

Noria news wires

A proposed ASTM International standard is aimed at creating a faster, simpler way to test the stability of lubricating greases. The test method could offer a number of benefits, such as using a smaller sample and providing results in a shorter time period compared to other methods.

Specifically, the proposed standard will test the oxidation stability of lubricating greases under accelerated oxidation conditions. This will help determine the longevity of the product.

ASTM's Subcommittee on Oxidation of Greases (part of Committee D02 on Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels, and Lubricants) is developing the standard: Test Method for Oxidation Stability of Lubricating Greases – Modified Rapid Small Scale Oxidation Test (mRSSOT), WK55271.

Lubricating grease producers, independent testing laboratories, research and development teams for new lubricating greases, and actual grease users could all benefit from the new test method.

With more than 12,000 standards operating globally, ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. The organization works across borders, disciplines and industries while harnessing the expertise of more than 30,000 members to create consensus and improve performance in manufacturing, materials, products, processes, systems and services.
