Schlumberger and Cambridge Viscosity Collaborate on HPHT Viscosity Standards

Recognizing that oil exploration increasingly involves reservoir fluids at pressures and temperatures not previously encountered, Schlumberger and Cambridge Viscosity formed a collaborative effort to define and develop viscosity standards appropriate for these new conditions.

The coalition sponsored an industry-wide High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) Viscosity Standards workshop to gauge interest, broaden support and guide the effort. Widespread industry participation in the workshop indicated significant interest in developing a fluid viscosity standards program.

Robert Kasameyer, president of Cambridge Viscosity, said, “The workshop concluded that suitable viscosity standards should be developed as soon as possible. Target fluid viscosities and conditions were identified and broad characteristics of a development program were discussed including the involvement of multiple measurement technologies and multiple laboratories in the effort.”

The workshop included four presentations and a roundtable panel discussion with industry experts in reservoir fluids. The executive summary of the entire session and several of the presentations are available at: http://www.slb.com/services/testing/reservoir_sampling/fluid_lab/hpht_pvt_studies/hpht_viscosity_standards.aspx
