Total Launches New Synthetic Compressor Lubricant

Total recently launched a new polyalkylene-glycol (PAG) lubricant for car air-conditioning compressors.

Planetelf PAG K40 is designed to meet the requirements of both refrigerant gases (R134a and HFO-1234yf) commonly present in the automotive air-conditioning industry while providing optimized performance regardless of the temperature.

Already referenced in original equipment by several manufacturers, the high-performance synthetic lubricant is specially formulated to offer compatibility and miscibility, allowing optimal cooling of the air-conditioning system, as well as compressor safety under heavy-duty use.

Along with thermal and chemical stability and anti-foaming properties, the lubricant is intended to help protect compressor parts and seals against wear and maintain its lubricity despite a drop in viscosity caused by the mixing of the refrigerant in the oil.

Since water (humidity in the air) in an air-conditioning system can cause severe damage to hoses and relief valves, the lubricant’s 250cc cans are filled under a nitrogen blanket to ensure a water content of less than 0.05 percent.
