Biosynthetic Technologies Launches Motor Oil Made from Soybean Oil

Biosynthetic Technologies recently launched a new line of synthetic motor oils manufactured with high-oleic soybean oil from soybeans grown by U.S. farmers.

Available in 5W-20 and 5W-30 grades, the Biosynthetic motor oils are formulated to reduce sludge and varnish as well as to improve fuel economy and provide environmental benefits for renewability and biodegradability.

The oils are certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and recognized as a certified biobased product by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The biobased alternative is suitable for high-temperature automotive and industrial applications.

To test the motor oil, the United Soybean Board (USB) introduced the product to multiple fleets in the Washington, D.C. area, including DC Water, the Smithsonian Institution, Arlington County and Prince George’s County.

“This biobased motor oil exceeded our expectations in terms of performance and engine cleanliness,” said Tim Fitzgerald, director of fleet management for DC Water. “The oil samples have shown increased longevity and stability over time, while the equipment appears to be cleaner, which is a definite plus for us. The oil is less harmful to the environment, and I see real potential for greater use of this biobased alternative in the future.”
