WHITE PAPER:
Alternatives to Traditional Oil Testing Using SEM/EDX
For years, wear debris and oil testing have been performed using traditional methods such as ferrography and particle counting in conjunction with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometry. While information gained from these technologies has been helpful in diagnosing engine or gearbox wear, users still struggle with knowing how to interpret data from the laboratory. One alternative is scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. This paper will explain how SEM/EDX works and how it compares to more traditional oil debris testing.
