Abanaki Corporation has introduced a solution to the problem of unskimmable matted grease in wastewater pits. A new accessory to Abanaki’s Grease Grabber oil skimmer, MatBuster churns the water surface and breaks up matted grease, so the oil skimmer can operate more effectively.
MatBuster has a zero maintenance design, consisting of stainless steel blades that mount to the tail pulley of the Grease Grabber. No separate motor or other moving parts are required.
The MatBuster uses the energy created by the Grease Grabber’s moving belt to chop the grease mat into easily removable chunks. To see how it operates, visit www.abanaki.com/064 and watch the instructional animated video.
This simple innovation is important to managers of steel or food production plants, where sometimes a thick layer of grease forms on the water in wastewater pits and sumps. Oil skimming makes use of differences in specific gravity and surface tension to separate oil from water. Floating matted grease, therefore, can interfere with oil skimmers used to cost-effectively reduce wastewater disposal costs and help meet government requirements for water discharge.
How it works: MatBuster is added to the tail pulley of Abanaki’s Grease Grabber oil skimmer, located about 1.5 feet below the surface of the water. While MatBuster’s blades break up clumps of grease, Grease Grabber removes grease and oil from the water at rates up to 160 gallons per hour.
For optimal results, managers may install low-pressure spray nozzles to keep the matted grease from sticking to the walls of the tank or wastewater pit.
Used with the MatBuster, the Grease Grabber oil skimmer is a reliable partner in wastewater cleanup. It is designed for extremely demanding applications, such as drainage pits in primary metal mills, in which heavy loads of grease and oil accumulate. To handle this load, the Grease Grabber uses an oil-filled gear reducer having bronze gears and ball bearings to drive pressure rolls with tractor treads that rotate the belt. This heavy-duty drive train elevates skimmed grease up to 100 feet or more for easy discharge into drums.
The drive unit can be mounted on a flat surface, or on a boom that suspends the Grease Grabber over the pit. Typical applications include:
· Drainage pits in primary metal mills and factories
· Underground tanks
· Wastewater sumps
· Parking lots, garages, and service facilities
· Truck, locomotive, and other mobile equipment washing facilities
